This would be the same as having a half note plus a quarter note. In other words we’d get this math problem. If we were to add a dot next to it making it a dotted half note we would have to add its original note value plus its half. The second example gives us a half note with a value of two. Looking at the 4 + 2 we can also say that the dotted half is the same value we would get if we were to have a whole note plus a half note. This will give us a little arithmetic practice as we now add up its original value plus half of its value. If we then went to add a dot next to it, making it a dotted whole note we would need to take half of the value of the whole note and add it in addition to its original value of four. We first have a half note which has a value of four beats. Lets take a look at the very first example. The dot next to a note or rest simply means that you are going to be adding half the value of that original note or rest to its length of time, to its value. As much as our notes have their values of time, so do our rests to help us know when to not play and for how long are we to remain with our instrument in silence, or pause. We cannot half music without some rests here and there. *For those of you who are not keen on math I spared you some of the math behind this which included multiplication of fractions, but if you’d like to see the math all you have to do is scroll down all the way to the bottom of this lesson. If we were to divide our sixteenth note we would get our thirty-second note because it would take thirty-two- thirty-second notes in order to equal four. If we were to divide this further, if we divided the eighth note in a half we would get a sixteenth note because it would take sixteen- sixteenth notes in order to equal four. This is because it will take eight eighth notes to equal four. Okay, so if we divide a quarter note by half we get an eighth. In math terms it would be 1/4, a quarter. *note how it took four quarter notes in order to make the equivalent of a whole note, due to this reason we refer to a single quarter note as a quarter note, because it is a quarter of a whole. Two quarter notes = 1 + 1 = 2 (equivalent to a half note)įour quarter notes = (1 + 1) + (1 + 1) = 2 + 2 = 4 Since half of two is one, we would need four ones in order to make four. Now we’re going to look at our half note and half of a half note is one, this is where we get our quarter note from.

Our whole note equals four so all we have to do is divide by two and we know that we will need two notes whose values equal 2 in order to get a sum of four, which in turn is our whole note. Let’s take a look at how we get our half note. It’s honestly just a cycle of dividing by two and having enough numbers whose sum will equal four. From this whole note, when we divide and subdivide and subdivide some more after that, we get our half note, quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note, thirty-second note, sixty-fourth note, etc. To start, we’ll take our whole note with a value of four as our note of origin.
